EU Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States against five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the move.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.
