No fewer than 13 individuals lose their lives and ninety-eight injured in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.
A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the pace and handling of the country's flagship public works projects.
The disaster took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a route constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate what caused this tragedy,” declared the country's president.
The president reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The leader noted plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the immediate past president, whose term finished the prior year. This venture was closely associated with his administration's developmental agenda for the southeastern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The building of both train projects was managed by the armed forces, marking a notable expansion of its duties in national projects. They were executed at an rapid pace, beating predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently sparked persistent apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an earlier accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a key rival party demanded an prompt halt in the development and management of all similar projects.
This stoppage was proposed until the completion of a full technical review. The party stated that the loss of life "demands immediate answers."
In reply, the national leader asserted that the train had been functioning in complete accordance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the construction and management of these strategic initiatives.
